Art Studio~Before and After (Almost!)

I've kept my word, stuck to my "to do" list, and finally got my home art studio in order!  I am so happy and excited!  Finally-a space of my own to work and create.

As some of you may already know, Steve and I purchased our farmhouse in mid-December last year.  It was a total rehab project, and we were both gung-ho on getting started.

My art room is on the second floor, and it was once a bedroom.  Steve and I decided to "chop" the room up.  We were going to use a third of it for our full bathroom, and the rest of it as my art studio.  This bedroom was HUGE, so I had NO problem with that.  Here is the before shot, when the room was a bedroom:

As you can see, the walls were a very dark maroon shade, the trim was the mustard yellow, and the original hardwood floors were painted brown.  Needless to say, this room was very dark.  Steve and I came up with a plan to improve the space and make it functional.  I requested a sink in my art studio, and he was okay with that since the plumbing for the bathroom would be right on the other side.  Easy!  We wanted to refinish the hardwood floors, brighten the walls up, and add shelving and cabinets for storage.

After 3 months, here is the after:

The closet on the right stayed.  Steve added track lighting, and I painted the back wall a dark gray for photographing my paintings (it works really well!).  The cabinets and sink on the left are from Ikea.  We had the area rug from our previous home.  We still need to finish some trim work.

I love how the hardwood floors turned out!  I was really happy were we able to keep the existing hardwood upstairs (no luck keeping it downstairs with all the demo).  The dresser was my mother's, and I just painted it a very dark gray, keeping the knobs a light beige.  I plan on doing some stenciling on the side (more of that to come later!).  The painting above the dresser is one of mine.  It is of our dogs, Camper and Pilot.  It's actually a painting I made for Steve, but I'm borrowing it for a little bit! :)

I have a ton of storage now, thankfully.  The shelving was put together by Steve (I painted it!).  The countertops are also from Ikea.

The storage bins from Target work wonders.  I needed some magazine organizers, so I snagged some from Ikea.

Haha, Steve thinks this ceramic doll is creepy!  I can never part with it though because it was made specially for me by my grandmother when I was 5 years old.  The picture is of my grandmother, lounging on a hammock.  I love this picture.  My grandma was a gifted artist, and she is definitely a big source of my inspiration.

Having pictures of my loved ones is very important to me.  It definitely adds a personal element of warmth to my studio.  The glasses on the right remind me of my vacation in St. Maarten with Steve from last year.  I found them when I was snorkeling!

And this magnetic bumper sticker just cracks me up.  My dog is smarter than your kid!  Ooh, more hardwood action! (that doesn't sound right, does it)

Tomorrow will be my first FULL day in my art studio, and I'm really excited!  I'm going to try and get some work in today before Steve gets home and we have to leave.  I'll be sure to post my new paintings!

Peacing out,
Nikki
